presentation -- The American Dream Starts at Your Library

12:30 - 1:30PM -- Discussion (optional)

Do you sometimes become uncomfortable when a foreign language speaking patron asks for help to learn English? Are you somewhat unfamiliar with English as a Second Language (ESL) resources? Ever wonder what happens to those patrons once they've been referred to outside resources? Get the knowledge and confidence you need to best serve the ESL patron with this workshop.

This workshop is designed to help library staff assist ESL patrons and includes:

  • How to conduct an ESL reference interview.
  • Recommended ESL resources (including a core list of materials).
  • Introduction to some of the tutoring groups in the area.
  • Brief description of how to promote the ESL collection with sample brochures and bookmarks.
  • Keynote speaker to describe the immigrant experience.

Though they will not be a part of the actual presentation, representatives from some of the major ESL publishers will be available to answer questions and distribute sample materials before the meeting, during the intermission, and after the presentation is over.

EMAIL YOUR QUESTIONS prior to the meeting to popowitchj@indianprairielibrary.org.
