Join Amy Franco in a presentation and discussion at the front of minds particularly in this time of crisis. Libraries are increasingly adding social services to their workload, but many library workers do not have the training or support that is expected for social workers or mental health experts. Most professionals agree that compassion fatigue is a combination of secondary trauma and burnout, and is commonly seen among first responders who are exposed to traumatic events. Though it is rewarding to help the most vulnerable people in the community, empathetic people are also at risk for taking on the emotional burdens and stressors of others. Playing a caring role can come with a price. If you ever feel worn out at work, overwhelmed, or preoccupied with someone you're trying to help, come to this workshop to assess your own personal level of compassion fatigue and learn self-care methods to help you cope.Amy Franco leads a nationally-recognized programming team at the Glen Ellyn Public Library, where she has worked for eight years. She holds dual Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Science in Information Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. Franco designs and coordinates public events, traveling exhibitions, and community engagement efforts, skills that have solidified her reputation as a leader in creative programming and continuing education for library workers. She previously served on the 2019 ILA Conference Program Committee. This is part of our SWAN eXpo 2020 Web Series which will be ongoing through 2020.
