Have you found yourself responsible for cataloging with little or no cataloging background? Is “cataloger” only one of many hats you wear at your library? This course is designed to provide the practical, hands-on training needed to succeed in cataloging print monographs. This course will introduce the tools and standards of cataloging, including basic concepts of cataloging, free resources, introduction to Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC), and basics of descriptive cataloging (RDA).

This course is NOT designed to focus on any specific ILS, or on local practices of any library or consortium.

This course will provide a strong foundation for newer catalogers and technical services staff, as well as a great refresher for more experienced catalogers, or anyone who just wants to understand more about bibliographic data.

This course is offered as a two-day in-person session with time for breaks and lunch. The course includes lectures, exercises, discussions, and quizzes. Participants will receive pre-course instructions and background reading materials. We encourage you to bring your own laptop, but RAILS can provide lab computers to work with if necessary.

An hour lunch break is planned for this training. RAILS will NOT provide lunch during the training. Attendees are welcome to bring a lunch (refrigerator and microwave are available). Attendees may also run out and purchase lunches from nearby restaurants.

Water, coffee, and tea will be provided for your refreshment.
