Library of Congress Subject Headings

This class provides an introduction to Library of Congress subject headings and the process of assigning subject headings to bibliographic works. Topics covered include:
-How to determine the subject(s) of a work
-Types of Library of Congress subjects, including topical, geographic, genre, children’s, and subdivisions
-Reviews of MARC coding in subject authority records, including fixed and variable fields
-How to construct a subject heading string
-Searching in the OCLC authority file
-Use of established headings in bibliographic records

Prerequisite
Attendees should be familiar with MARC coding and authority records.
