Introduction to Authority Records

This class provides an introduction to authority records, which are records that establish an approved form of a name, series, subject, or uniform title to be used in headings in bibliographic records. Topics covered include:
-Purpose of authority records
-Explanation of MARC coding in authority records, including fixed and variable fields
-How to interpret an authority record, including See references, See also references, attributes, and notes
-Introduction to searching in the OCLC authority file
-Use of established headings in bibliographic records

This class qualifies for cataloging CE credit for SHARE catalogers.

Prerequisite
Attendees should be familiar with MARC coding.
