There is a lot of talk about STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) but do we all understand what STEM is, why it is important now and how we can share this topic with our patrons? Learn from education and outreach staff of a national science lab where STEM is part of our work every day.

•Why is there so much talk about STEM/STEAM?
•What is STEM?
•What is my role?
•What else should I learn?
•What can I do next?

Desired Outcomes:
•Participants will experience an engaging activity to think about what STEM is and gain background on the latest authoritative sources regarding the field of STEM and careers of the future.
•Participants will gain an understanding of how people experience and learn science in informal settings.
•By better understanding the background of what STEM is and why it is important library staff can deepen their understanding of STEM as a basis for their services and collection.

Intended Audience:
Any public, school or academic library staff interested in STEM programming

Content Level:

Susan Dahl, Fermilab Education Program Leader, established and has managed the Teacher Resource Center for over 25 years. The TRC is an instructional materials preview collection of PreK-12 + STEM materials and services including professional development. Susan has presented at national, regional and local conferences for educators and librarians, including Chicago area library systems. Ms. Dahl has served as an expert reviewer for the European Commission Science and Society grants program. Susan served on her local public library board and was a founding director of a library technology consortium.

Type:   Workshop

RAILS is partnering with the Illinois State Library, an ISBE approved provider, to provide PDH credit. Two (2) professional development hours (PDHs) will be available for those who attending this workshop. Please bring your IEIN to the workshop to include on the attendance sheet. An evaluation form must be submitted prior to receiving credit hours. The forms will be provided during the workshop. Please contact with questions.
