Each day in America shell-shocked patrons walk into public libraries asking for help in dealing with both the job search process and/or the destructive effects of the current economic climate. So what can library staff do to help these patrons, especially if they themselves are challenged with similar fears? The more that library staffers understand the psychology behind distressed emotions and learn about the tools used to manage this distress, the more effective they will be for their patrons, while at the same time supporting their own emotional health. Instructor Diane Shelton, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and a career consultant, will draw from her extensive experience in the library, corporate, non-profit, medical, and entrepreneurial worlds to create an outstanding learning experience for attendees.

At the end of this session, participants will:
•	Know how to best help those who are in a fragile emotional state
•	Be able to define the types of listening skills, including empathic/reflective listening, needed to help those who are under duress
•	Have an understanding of when it is okay to “stop helping”
•	Know when one’s own issues have been triggered (especially in light of today’s economic uncertainty)
•	Be able to inspire hope and increase motivation in those who are in the job search process
•	Know how to assess a situation and maintain safety when dealing with patrons

The Statewide Cataloging Standards Committee (SCSC) was formed in 2000 and was charged with the responsibility of creating a cataloging standards http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/whats_new/pdfs/catalog_standards.pdf document that would form the basis of improving the quality of cataloging in the consortial catalogs in Illinois. In support of these standards the SCSC has created the first level of testing, a barcoder certification test, which will help to identify the training needs of barcoders.

To help prepare PrairieCat barcoders and catalogers for the Barcode Certification Test, a sample test is available at http://www.palsnet.info/member-services/cataloging/barcode-sample-test

The Barcoder Certification Test has two parts, both of which must be passed at the same sitting of the Test. The first part is made up of matching, multiple choice and short answer questions on general terminology, http://www.palsnet.info/services/ts/palsgroup/docs/Acryonymsterms.pdf, basic MARC http://www.loc.gov/marc/umb/ and searching. Passing the first part requires getting 14 of the 28 possible points. The second part is made of eight hands-on exercises where the barcoder is asked to follow PALS cataloging policies and procedures in attaching a call number and copy/item record to the proper record, if applicable and reporting any problems with a bibliographic record, or referring items to a copy or original cataloger. This portion of the Evaluation requires getting 50 of the 72 possible points. The Barcode Certification Test will be given regularly (monthly) at the PALS Service Centers. Check the PALS L2 calendar for the next scheduled Barcode Testing day at http://www.librarylearning.info.

Upon successful completion of the Test, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion for the Barcode Level Test.

In this 2-part hands-on workshop, participants will learn the basics of HTML, which is the underlying structure of a website. The opening session will introduce basic HTML tags and how they display in a web browser. Participants are encouraged to bring some simple ideas and images on a flash drive, which we will use to create simple web pages. The second session will build on the first session and will introduce the concept of style sheets and their function in overall web design.

At the end of the two sessions, the participants will . . .

Understand the basic structure of a web page by being able to view the source code and make sense of it

Be able to create a simple web page, including hotlinks and images

About this event:
Best selling author Wells Tower joins host Victoria Lautman for a discussion of his writing and his book Ravaged, Everything Burned.

When Tower published his first story collection last year, the response was frenzied: Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned sold out within weeks, garnering intense praise and a vast fan-base. Tower's characters experience humiliation, anger, and loneliness, but told with astounding wit and tenderness.

Writers on the Record with Victoria Lautman is a partnership with the Chicago Public Library and 98.7WFMT Radio. The interview will be broadcast on Sunday, February 14th, at noon.
