About this event:

T.C. Boyle, one of the most acclaimed American writers of today, will read from and sign his new collection of stories, Wild Child. The fourteen stories gathered here display both Boyle’s astonishing range and his imaginative storytelling. Nature is the dominant player in many of the stories and all are incisive and entertaining with his trademark wit and socially conscious sensibility.

About this event:

Chicago author Jerald Walker reads from and signs his new memoir, Street Shadows: A Memoir of Race, Rebellion, and Redemption.

In this moving and masterfully told story, Walker reveals his own struggles growing up in Chicago housing projects, a boy of great promise, his decent into the 'thug life' and the wakeup call that led to him finding himself again. It is an eloquent account of how the past shadows but need not determine the present.

Does the word "advocacy" scare you? It shouldn't. Every time you discuss your library media program (in print, online, or in person), you ARE advocating. These days it is more important than ever to get the message out about the value of your school library media program. Join ISLMA Legislative Advocate Lou Ann Jacobs for an online OPAL presentation on some basics of advocacy planning and presenting to your various audiences. There will be plenty of opportunity for attendees to join in the discussion and share their experiences and suggestions.

Libraries have a need to respond to the increasing number of homeless and marginally housed people in the community. Limitations such as illiteracy, illness, social isolation, hunger and discrimination that affect the homeless hamper the effectiveness of traditional library services. This program offers practical examples of how libraries can deliver relevant services to the homeless with a minimum of disruption to other library users.

Learning Objectives:

Understand the demographics, social realities and characteristics of the homeless.

Be able to find the homeless and homeless services in their service area.

Develop an effective and legal service strategy for the homeless, including a plan to evaluate how well their library serves the homeless.

Be able to communicate to the homeless about library services.

**************************************************************************************************
light refreshments

1:00 - 2:30PM: In the afternoon, after a :30 minute break, a panel of representatives from local social services and libraries will discuss what is available locally to help libraries serve homeless patrons and what some libraries have done or are doing now. Following the panel participants will have an opportunity to discuss how their library is working with the homeless and ask questions.

Each day in America shell-shocked patrons walk into public libraries asking for help in dealing with both the job search process and/or the destructive effects of the current economic climate. So what can library staff do to help these patrons, especially if they themselves are challenged with similar fears? The more that library staffers understand the psychology behind distressed emotions and learn about the tools used to manage this distress, the more effective they will be for their patrons, while at the same time supporting their own emotional health. Instructor Diane Shelton, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and a career consultant, will draw from her extensive experience in the library, corporate, non-profit, medical, and entrepreneurial worlds to create an outstanding learning experience for attendees.

At the end of this session, participants will:
•	Know how to best help those who are in a fragile emotional state
•	Be able to define the types of listening skills, including empathic/reflective listening, needed to help those who are under duress
•	Have an understanding of when it is okay to “stop helping”
•	Know when one’s own issues have been triggered (especially in light of today’s economic uncertainty)
•	Be able to inspire hope and increase motivation in those who are in the job search process
•	Know how to assess a situation and maintain safety when dealing with patrons

The Statewide Cataloging Standards Committee (SCSC) was formed in 2000 and was charged with the responsibility of creating a cataloging standards http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/whats_new/pdfs/catalog_standards.pdf document that would form the basis of improving the quality of cataloging in the consortial catalogs in Illinois. In support of these standards the SCSC has created the first level of testing, a barcoder certification test, which will help to identify the training needs of barcoders.

To help prepare PrairieCat barcoders and catalogers for the Barcode Certification Test, a sample test is available at http://www.palsnet.info/member-services/cataloging/barcode-sample-test

The Barcoder Certification Test has two parts, both of which must be passed at the same sitting of the Test. The first part is made up of matching, multiple choice and short answer questions on general terminology, http://www.palsnet.info/services/ts/palsgroup/docs/Acryonymsterms.pdf, basic MARC http://www.loc.gov/marc/umb/ and searching. Passing the first part requires getting 14 of the 28 possible points. The second part is made of eight hands-on exercises where the barcoder is asked to follow PALS cataloging policies and procedures in attaching a call number and copy/item record to the proper record, if applicable and reporting any problems with a bibliographic record, or referring items to a copy or original cataloger. This portion of the Evaluation requires getting 50 of the 72 possible points. The Barcode Certification Test will be given regularly (monthly) at the PALS Service Centers. Check the PALS L2 calendar for the next scheduled Barcode Testing day at http://www.librarylearning.info.

Upon successful completion of the Test, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion for the Barcode Level Test.

In this 2-part hands-on workshop, participants will learn the basics of HTML, which is the underlying structure of a website. The opening session will introduce basic HTML tags and how they display in a web browser. Participants are encouraged to bring some simple ideas and images on a flash drive, which we will use to create simple web pages. The second session will build on the first session and will introduce the concept of style sheets and their function in overall web design.

At the end of the two sessions, the participants will . . .

Understand the basic structure of a web page by being able to view the source code and make sense of it

Be able to create a simple web page, including hotlinks and images

Understand the concept of a stylesheet and how that effects a web page design

Be able to look at a library website and see how it is structured

Session #1: Basic HTML, including adding hotlinks and images. We will also discuss the concept of a web host: how does the website “go live” on the Web?

Feb. 18, Session #2: More HTML, and adding style sheets to web pages. This session will also include a brief tour of some well designed library websites; we will spend a little time looking at how those websites are structured. register at: www.librarylearning.info/events/?eventID=7499

About this event:
Best selling author Wells Tower joins host Victoria Lautman for a discussion of his writing and his book Ravaged, Everything Burned.

When Tower published his first story collection last year, the response was frenzied: Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned sold out within weeks, garnering intense praise and a vast fan-base. Tower's characters experience humiliation, anger, and loneliness, but told with astounding wit and tenderness.

Writers on the Record with Victoria Lautman is a partnership with the Chicago Public Library and 98.7WFMT Radio. The interview will be broadcast on Sunday, February 14th, at noon.

In these times of tight budgets and restricted travel, attending national conferences has become impossible for many library staff. Many local and regional agencies are joining forces to coordinate "mini" conferences that provide the means of connecting and collaborating locally, often providing a more focused and meaningful experience for attendees. Since 2005, the Northeast Chapter of REFORMA has joined forces with ALA ethnic caucuses to present a terrific conference where library workers network, exchange ideas and listen to quality speakers. What started as an idea has grown into an annual event embraced by REFORMA, AILA, APALA, BCALA and CALA. Come hear best practices in planning, coordinating and hosting a "mini" conference from your colleagues who have had success in their regions.

Feb. 11, Session #1: Basic HTML, including adding hotlinks and images. We will also discuss the concept of a web host: how does the website “go live” on the Web? register at: www.librarylearning.info/events/?eventID=7498 for Part I.

Session #2: More HTML, and adding style sheets to web pages. This session will also include a brief tour of some well designed library websites; we will spend a little time looking at how those websites are structured.

Librarians have long led the way in the attempt to organize the world’s published information through the use of standard subject headings and the ubiquitous, demanding MARC record. As more information moves into electronic forms and the tools used to access them become more sophisticated, are our old standards still relevant today? Has keyword trumped the subject heading? Much information description and metadata production is also moving out of the hands of librarians. Will online tagging or vendor descriptions remove the need for librarians? And what is the deal with RDA, the new AACR2?

Renee Register, Senior Product Manager at OCLC, and others will review current cataloging practices and discuss the future of metadata, the MARC record, Library of Congress Subject Headings, the Resource Description and Access standard, and the librarian's place in online information organization and access.

This webcast is 90 minutes in length and will take place at the North Suburban Library System.

About this event:

Patti Smith, the world renowned writer, musician and visual artist, discusses and signs her new book, Just Kids, a memoir of her time in New York with Robert Mapplethorpe. It was the summer Coltrane died, the summer of love and riots, and the summer when a chance encounter in Brooklyn led two young people on a path of art, devotion and initiation. Smith would evolve as a poet and performer and Mapplethorpe would direct his highly provocative style toward photography.

Just Kids begins as a love story and ends as an elegy. It is a fascinating look at New York City in the late sixties and seventies and a beautiful portrait of two young artists’ prelude to fame. Cosponsored by Borders Books and Music.

Please note: Seating is very limited and provided on a first come, first served basis. The Library opens at 1 p.m. and the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium doors open at 1:30 p.m.

Where are the boundaries of the original farm where I live? I want to start raising layers – how can I get started? Do I need a permit to sell homemade jam at the local farmer’s market? How can we start a farmer’s market in our community? Take a shortcut to quality online resources to answer questions like these and use your new knowledge to build patronage in your library.

Presenter: Presenters will be from the Vespasian Warner Public Library
Here they come…looking for their dead relatives, obits, graves, stories. How can you help patrons on a genealogy quest when you haven’t even created your own family tree? Learn how to get the correct information out of the patron first and where to send them next. Your patrons will think they asked the right questions of the right person (YOU!) at the right time. Set them up for success. Presenters will be from the Vespasian Warner Public Library, the 2009 recipient of the Illinois State Genealogical Society Community Service Award and the DeWitt County Genealogical Society.

The best practices available to manage chat, SMS, IM, and email questions will be reviewed along with demonstrations of each. We will also look at the advantages and disadvantages of virtual reference services in general and debate whether the work is worth the benefit.

Which books have the greatest “kid appeal”? Which books best translate into ideas, projects and activities for instruction? And, which books just don’t measure up to the publishing hype? Finding the answers can be tough!

Dr. Peggy Sharp, noted author and children’s literature expert, is back to help you explore the vast jungle of new children’s titles and create new learning and book telling strategies based on the year’s best books.

Let Peggy show you the secret to selecting “good” books—books that are well written and engaging. Also, take advantage of Peggy’s “Best List” of picture books, beginning-to-read books, chapter books, novels, poetry, and non-fiction from many of your favorite authors. This full-day, fun seminar also provides a wonderful opportunity for participants to meet and share ideas with other librarians and educators who are interested in learning about the significant issues and trends in books and publishing for children.

All participants will receive a “What’s New in Children’s Books” Resource Handbook which includes an annotated bibliography of the best new children’s books published in the last year.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

•	Motivate even the most reluctant readers with winning book selections
•	Utilize techniques for sharing new books that will encourage kids to read for themselves
•	Get the most for your money when purchasing children’s books

Registration and Coffee start at 8:00 a.m. Lunch and breakfast snack are included.
