Come anytime between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. Please allow a couple of hours to complete the test. >>This test is for library staff associated with PrairieCat libraries only.<<

The Statewide Cataloging Standards Committee (SCSC) was formed in 2000 and was charged with the responsibility of creating a cataloging standards <a href="http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/libraries/cataloging_standards.html>http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/libraries/cataloging_standards.html</a> document that would form the basis of improving the quality of cataloging in the consortial catalogs in Illinois. In support of these standards the SCSC has created the first level of testing, a barcoder certification test, which will help to identify the training needs of barcoders.

To help prepare PrairieCat barcoders and catalogers for the Barcode Certification Test, a sample test is available at http://support.prairiecat.info/services/barcode-testing

The Barcoder Certification Test has two parts, both of which must be passed at the same sitting of the Test. The first part is made up of matching, multiple choice and short answer questions on general terminology, http://support.prairiecat.info/system/files/Public/Barcode-Level%20Cataloging%20Certification/BarcodeTestAcronyms.pdf, basic MARC http://www.loc.gov/marc/umb/ and searching. Passing the first part requires getting 14 of the 28 possible points. The second part is made of eight hands-on exercises where the barcoder is asked to follow PrairieCat cataloging policies and procedures in searching, matching and attaching a call number and copy/item record to the proper record, if applicable and reporting any problems with bibliographic records, or referring items to a copy or original cataloger. This portion of the Evaluation requires getting 50 of the 72 possible points. The Barcode Certification Test will be given regularly (monthly) at the RAILS Coal Valley, Rockford and Shorewood Service Centers. Check the PrairieCat L2 calendar for the next scheduled Barcode Testing day at http://www.librarylearning.info.

Upon successful completion of the Test, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion for the Barcode Level Test and a named login to the Innovative Interfaces Inc Sierra system(a/k/a Sierra).

The Resource Sharing Alliance invites all RSA school librarians to attend the Back to School Workshop on Thursday, August 8, 2013, beginning at 9:30 am and ending at 3:00 pm. This workshop will be held in-person at the RAILS East Peoria Service Center, 600 High Point Lane in East Peoria.

Attendees may attend the whole workshop or a portion of it. Please register here on L2 if you plan to attend.

A tentative agenda for the RSA Back to School Workshop is posted at http://alsi.sdp.sirsi.net/client/search/asset/3283. Please note agenda items are subject to change. A final agenda will be posted here, as well as on the RSA listserv, this summer.

The purpose of the Back to School Workshop is to discuss RSA topics that are relevant to school libraries: circulation, cataloging, reports, system administration, special projects, OCLC, and more! Any school library staff member who would like a “refresher” on RSA operations is encouraged to attend this workshop. Please note RSA staff will not provide in-depth training during the RSA Back to School Workshop.

In addition to the topics listed on the agenda, there will be time to network with fellow school librarians and ask questions of RSA staff. Workshop attendees will enjoy complimentary snacks and lunch provided by RSA.

Feel free to bring your laptop that has WorkFlows installed on it. (Please note you must install the most up-to-date version of the WorkFlows software on your laptop PRIOR to the workshop. RSA staff will not be able to provide WorkFlows installation assistance on the day of the workshop).

Print copies of the workshop packets will be available for those who attend this workshop.

Continuing professional development units (CPDUs) will be available to those who would like to receive credit for their participation in the Back to School Workshop. Workshop attendees will complete the CPDU paperwork at the end of the workshop on August 8th.

The Statewide Cataloging Standards Committee (SCSC) was formed in 2000 and was charged with the responsibility of creating a cataloging standards http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/whats_new/pdfs/catalog_standards.pdf document that would form the basis of improving the quality of cataloging in the consortial catalogs in Illinois.
