During this hands-on session, you will learn how to upload video clips to a computer; cut out undesired footage; make smooth and interesting transitions between clips; insert other graphics like logos and photos; add an audio soundtrack; add titles and credits. With these basics, you will be able to use most of the currently popular video editing software applications. If you’d like, bring your digital videocamera/camera, with 4-5 minutes of footage you’ve taped, to use during the class. You may also bring a partner, but only one person will have access to a computer. Space is limited to 12. Partners do not need to sign up. Presented by Karen McBride, Web Services Librarian at the Des Plaines Public Library.

Each day in America shell-shocked patrons walk into public libraries asking for help in dealing with both the job search process and/or the destructive effects of the current economic climate. So what can library staff do to help these patrons, especially if they themselves are challenged with similar fears? The more that library staffers understand the psychology behind distressed emotions and learn about the tools used to manage this distress, the more effective they will be for their patrons, while at the same time supporting their own emotional health. Instructor Diane Shelton, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and a career consultant, will draw from her extensive experience in the library, corporate, non-profit, medical, and entrepreneurial worlds to create an outstanding learning experience for attendees. At the end of this session, participants will: • Know how to best help those who are in a fragile emotional state • Be able to define the types of listening skills, including empathic/reflective listening, needed to help those who are under duress • Have an understanding of when it is okay to “stop helping” • Know when one’s own issues have been triggered (especially in light of today’s economic uncertainty) • Be able to inspire hope and increase motivation in those who are in the job search process • Know how to assess a situation and maintain safety when dealing with patrons

Illinois libraries are being requested to collect statistics in eight areas: Customer Visits/Door Count Internet/Public Computer Number of Reference Questions Children Participating in Programs Adults Participating in Programs Circulation Total for the Day Date Base Usage Web Page Hits Eventually, libraries are being requested to record these statistics using Survey Monkey.

Has there ever been a more important time for a face-to-face gathering with our legislators? Take the opportunity to deliver your message in person at the NSLS Legislative Breakfast. After you register, be sure to reach out and encourage your legislators to celebrate Presidents' Day with their local library staff and trustees. In the event of extreme weather conditions on February 15, NSLS will place an announcement at the start of our phone greeting if the Legislative Breakfast needs to be cancelled.
