Join us for our 6th annual PALS Day at the i Wireless Center located on the Mississippi River in downtown Moline.This year we are offering early bird registration. If you register between late January and March 31st, the cost for PALS Day will be $30 for half day registration. If you register between April 1st and April 15th, the cost will be $35 for half day. You can attend either in the morning or in the afternoon. Lunch is included in the price.We are offering more sessions than ever this year. We have some popular presenters and topics making a return to provide fresh information.The PALS Marketing Power Team will be manning the tables in the concourse area at the center for their annual Swap and Share. Four PALS member librarians will present a panel in the afternoon on how their library uses social networking/communications tools like Facebook, Twitter, blogs and more to stay connected with their users and market library services. Our Keynote speaker will be Tracie D. Hall, Founder and Principal Consultant of GoodSeed Consulting. Tracie's speech entitled May I Please Blow Up This Reference Desk? offers a lively analysis of the nation’s deep societal shifts and the challenges facing libraries to re-image library services as we know them. In this compelling and interactive discussion of important social trends, participants will gain insight into better matching traditional library services with contemporary user needs.Tracie's follow-up program in the afternoon under the same title will be an interactive workshop leading participants through a series of exercises in which they will explore ways to innovate, leverage, rethink, redesign and reposition resources, services, and key access points at their very own libraries. An emphasis will be placed on relevant social trends and best practices in reaching youth, new immigrants, low-income populations, working adults, seniors, remote users, and otherwise hard-to-reach users.Podcasting (11:15 am to 12:15 pm)Max Anderson, Technology Coordinator at the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Greater Midwest Region will discuss how to promote your services and reach out to more people. Want to learn how podcasts can help and how to make your own? This overview is designed to provide a fun yet informative introduction to podcasting and how you can utilize this technology in your library services, to enable your users to access the information whenever they want, wherever they want and however they want it. Screencasting (2:30 to 3:30 pm)In the afternoon Max will discuss how screencasts or tutorials can be effective ways to create instructional content. In this one-hour overview, we will look at different types of screencasts and the software/hardware needed to create them.Playing With the Enemy for Success! (11:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:30 to 3:30 pm)Gary Moore will talk about how an untrained and inexperienced author can write, sell and promote an award winning book and sell Hollywood to make a movie!Who's Next? Going Mobile with Your Library Services (11:15 am to 12:15 pm)Tom Peters, CEO of Tap Information Services will use his experience as a volunteer with the international collaborative SMS-based text reference service, My Info Quest (http://www.myinfoquest.info), to explore how going mobile can transform and re-energize your library's services as we all move from "web search" to "social search".Online Public Programs and Professional Development Opportunities Using Webconferencing (2:30 to 3:30 pm)Tom Peters will use his experience as the coordinator of OPAL (http://www.opal-online.org), a collaborative webconferencing service, as a springboard to a general exploration of trends in webconferencing software and online events both for library workers and for members of the general public.Mark Twain Impersonator (1:15 to 2:15 pm and 2:30 to 3:30 pm)Since we'll be on the mighty Mississippi River, what better place to have Jim Post entertain you with his performance as Mark Twain? We're Out of Space: Now What? (11:15 am to 12:15 pm)Fred Schlipf will be joining us again by popular demand. This session is an introduction to the entire planning and building process.Expanding Library Buildings and Converting Non-Library Buildings (1:15 to 2:15 pm)Fred Schlipf will touch upon special problems and their solutions, with warnings about where troubles can occur.Fred will also meet with individual libraries to discuss their specific issues.What's New in Children's Literature for Spring 2010 (11:00 am to 12:00 pm)Kathleen March, from Anderson's Book Store, will present a review of the best new books for grades K - 8 plus ideas as to how they can be incorporated into the classroom.Books Your Book Group Will Love to Talk About (1:15 to 2:15 pm)In the afternoon session, Kathleen March will review some of the best new (or notable) books for adult book groups.Making Collections Count (11:00 am to 12:00 pm)Mary Kelly, Librarian at Salem-South Lyon District Library in South Lyon, Michigan, will provide information on collection development, quality, maintenance, and weeding.Tech Support IS Reference (1:15 to 2:15 pm)In her afternoon program, Mary Kelly will discuss reference issues and how providing technical support can be a win-win situation for the patron and the library.Riverside Chat with Anne Craig (11:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:15 to 2:15 pm)Anne Craig, Director of the Illinois State Library will hold two question and answer sessions regarding state library issues.Menu: There will be a mixture of bagels & cream cheese along with muffins, fresh fruit, coffee, tea and water for breakfast.Lunch will be served from 12:00 to 1:15 in sit down style on the second floor concourse. The menu will consist of Chicken Florentine, salad, garlic mashed potatoes, grilled vegetables and spinach cream sauce, rolls, dessert and beverage. The vegetarian option will be Eggplant Parmesan.
