As libraries continue to be challenged by the economic and political pressures to reduce their budgets, it is even more important for library staff to be sure that the services they are offering are cost effective, necessary, and meet the community’s needs. Past assumptions and rules may have been turned upside down in this time of economic distress, but it does give libraries the opportunity to re-think their programs, clear out the clutter, and be open to new ways of providing outstanding service. Anthony Auston and Susan Strunk from the Palatine Public Library and Paula Moore of the Arlington Heights Memorial Library will lead this helpful discussion and offer attendees the opportunity to share and compare “Sunsetting” experiences. At the end of this program participants will:• Be able to identify the decision-making process for sunsetting a service• Know what questions should be asked when examining sunsetting a particular service• Know what statistics should be employed when coming to a conclusion about sunsetting• Be able to identify examples of services that were successfully sunsetted at other librariesA minimum of 10 attendees are needed for this program, so please register as soon as possible!
