Changing Libraries into 21st Century Learning Environments

Today's libraries and library professionals must commit to continuous learning to maintain and expand expertise. This commitment includes a knowledge of and vision for the library as a learning organization as well as the design and implementation of an extensive orientation, training, continuing education and professional development organizational plan of action.

Included in the workshop will be a discussion of terminology, the incorporation of learning language into the organization's leadership and management content, the creation of learning profiles of all levels of library professionals and an overview of best practices of learning organizations. Workshop handouts will include learning organization content, paradigm shifts of today's to tomorrow's library and forms and guides for changing organizations.

Participant outcomes include:
-a basic knowledge of a learning organization as well as a library AS a learning organization
-an overview of the planning process and content for designing the continuous learning plan of action
-an understanding of the critical aspects of learning profiles for library professionals
-an appreciation for the paradigm shift to continuous learning
-an understanding of the steps required and forms needed for evolving into a learning organization

Presenter:
Dr. Julie Todaro, ALA President and Dean of Library Services for Austin Community College in Texas. Dr. Todaro has over 40 years of experience in academic, public, school and special libraries and is a library manager, workshop presenter and consultant in both leadership and management with extensive experience in strategic planning; organizational design and effectiveness, and change; facilities design; mentorship; community partnerships; customer service; marketing and advocacy; facilitation; and, continuous learning. Dr. Todaro has worked for Austin Community College (ACC) since 1986 and has been Dean of Library Services since 2001. In this role, she manages eleven full service campus libraries, center libraries and is responsible for operational and strategic planning, budgeting, and design of new and renovated libraries.
