In this class, participants will learn the criteria that is used to determine if a bibliographic record in the database is a match for an item in hand. We will look at effective search strategies for different formats of material, and the match points that are used when comparing an item to a record. We will also look at the differences between a monograph and a serial record. Searching will primarily be done in the SHARE Polaris database. Attendees must have a login for Polaris
An understanding of MARC coding is recommended, but not required. A short tutorial on MARC coding is available at this link: http://www.oclc.org/support/training/portfolios/cataloging-and-metadata/marc/tutorials/intro-marc-tagging.en.htmlThe tutorial is somewhat outdated, but still gives a good general overview.
