Helping People Become Citizens (Training by the USCIS)

  • Indian Prairie Library will host one meeting on September 11 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

    For those who cannot attend the Sept. 11 training, there are two alternate trainings at Evanston Public Library on September 26 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and Waukegan Public Library on September 19 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. To register for one of the other trainings, or for questions about the training, please email Brittany DiPiazza of Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights at bdipiazza@icirr.org.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services staff will train library personal on the naturalization process and available USCIS
resources and how to provide information to interested aspiring citizens.

The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights in partnership with USCIS proposes ILLINOIS CITIZENSHIP CORNERS at local public libraries throughout the State of Illinois to provide top quality information, resources, and references to residents on citizenship and other immigration topics.

ILLINOIS CITIZENSHIP CORNERS will provide:
> details regarding how to apply for citizenship
> where citizens can find assistance for filling out their immigration application and FAQs
> information on ESL courses, and much more

THE ILLINOIS CITIZENSHIP CORNERS program will include:

1. Designating resource areas as "Citizenship Corners" at the library, equipped with materials to highlight the importance of citizenship and to provide
essential information about the process
2. Training library personal on the naturalization process and available USCIS resources and how to provide information to interested aspiring citizens
3. Partnering with Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) recognized legal service groups and community organizations to host immigration, English as a Second Language [ESL] classes and citizenship workshops
4. Offering a list of non-profit groups providing naturalization assistance in the local community
5. Developing a comprehensive resource directory of citizenship services
