Bibliographic records in MARC format are the basis of online library catalogs. An understanding of MARC records is fundamental in providing effective patron service, whether through cataloging or reference. In this class, participants will learn how to interpret MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloging) formatting in bibliographic records. Topics include the structure of a MARC record and how fields are formatted using tags, indicators, and subfields. We will also look at how the MARC record determines what is seen by the patron in the Public Access Catalog (PAC).
