This hands-on workshop will address the critical elements of library disaster prevention, planning, and recovery. Participants of the workshop will learn about different types of library disasters and their implications for collections, physical facilities, and human health and safety including water, fire and storm-related disasters. Participants will learn how to plan for disasters including assessing and mitigating risks, creating an institutional disaster plan, and organizing a disaster recovery team. Participants will learn basic salvage techniques for typical library formats including books and paper, photographs, a/v media, and archival materials.Participants will then take part in a wet-disaster recovery activity organizing and carrying out salvage of water-damaged items, putting into practice the information and skills they learned in the workshop. Attendees should dress appropriately for handling wet library and archive materials.
